Kayak Seminar Comments

The class was great.  I can see now why you spend so much time covering everything.  To the novice, it provided great information.  To the experienced, it provided a reminder about everything.  I would love to do this again! - Daniel G.

Thanks again for a great weekend! Your seminar was very professional done and very informative. I especially liked the way you made the class room time "hands-on" with all the equipment on display. While we were faced with some tough fishing conditions on Sunday, many people caught fish using the information you presented. - Chet C.

Great course. I am really glad I took it. - Penn J

The seminar was extremely informative. I have been wade fishing those waters for over 25 years. Your seminar has giving me some practical, on the water tactics, that will allow me to use a kayak to get into spots quickly and efficiently and increase my chances for more consistent hook-ups. Along with the kayak tactics, all the practical info on all the different factors such a wind-speed, tides, position of sun, direction of winds, launch spots, and exact preparation steps will make my kayak fishing experiences much more enjoyable. I also feel like you have opened up a whole new fishery, the Brown and Root Flat and the Lighthouse Lake Trails, that I have never considered before. I will definitely recommend your services to all. - Homer S.

Here's a pic of the Red you saw me catch today (the day after your seminar). Your fish fighting advice paid off. He was 29" long. My first cast ever with that lure got him! Thanks again for the weekend. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. - Chad L.

I really enjoyed the seminar, Thanks. I'll make sure I pass the good word. - Jeff

I really did learn a lot. I have wanted something like this for a long time and for the price, it was an awesome deal. I really had a great time. - David M.

Just wanted to thank you for a great class it was very informative and you are a great role model for the Kayaking and Fly Fishing world. I hope to see you again on the flats. - Chris L.

I enjoyed the kayak seminar. Now I am definitely hooked on hunting for these shallow water reds. - Forrest S.

These classes sell out rather quickly so do not hesitate.

  • What am I paying for?  Your fee covers the 2 day seminar, the handout, and a copy of Capt. Sally's book.. The first day is spent indoors on class instruction (and fly casting help for the Fly Gear Session). Lefty Ray will conduct the majority of the day with Captain Sally appearing at the final portion of the day. The second day is spent on the water putting those tactics into practice. Half of the group will be with Lefty Ray and half with Capt. Sally. Mid-point in the day the 2 groups will switch. Sunday is NOT a guided trip. Sunday is intended to put into practice what we covered on Saturday.

  • What will you cover on Saturday? (A) We will cover how to hunt for redfish with a kayak in shallow water. Typically we use a kayak to get from point A to point B and then jump out and wade in clear mid-calf high water on a saltwater flat. (B) How to rig up a new kayak. (C) Where to wade in the Aransas Pass/Port Aransas area (Lighthouse Lakes Trail, Brown & Root Flat, etc.). (D) Fine tune your casting ability (fly rodders only).

  • Do I need to bring a kayak? Yes, if you do not own one there are nearby rental places in Rockport and Aransas Pass. Please no canoes or sit-inside-kayaks. Kayak rentals will be available from Capt. Sally.

  • Is lodging included in the seminar price?  No. We recommend the Mariner in Port Aransas. This will be the location for the Saturday portion of the seminar Contact them at 361-749-8200. There are other hotels in Aransas Pass, Rockport, Port Aransas, and Corpus Christi and I can send this info on request.

  • What if I need to cancel?  You can cancel up until the stated cancellation date set for each seminar and receive a full refund. Call 210-260-6154 to cancel. After the deadline or if you are a no-show, there will be no refunds.

  • Will you cover surf fishing or bait fishing?  No.

  • How long will the seminar last?  On Saturday, expect to stay most of the day (6:00 pm'ish). We will stay until every question is answered, every topic covered, and everyone is comfortable with all of the information conveyed. Do we know all the answers? No we don’t, but we will help you get up to speed without hitting all the speed bumps and mistakes we went through. Learning what not to do is worth the price alone. On Sunday we will launch around daybreak and return to shore a minimum of 6 hours.

  • Is lunch included? No, we will break for lunch on Saturday, but everyone is on their own. On Sunday bring something to eat and drink on the water.

  • Will we do any actual fishing?  Saturday is set aside primarily for instruction. Sunday you may fish as long as you like. Sunday is not considered a guided trip.

  • What if we encounter bad weather on Sunday? We will try to schedule a makeup day or you can participate at any future seminar in 2008.

What to Expect

On Saturday we will try to convey close to 20 years worth of combined kayak fishing experience. We do not know all of the answers but will give you as much information as possible to successfully chase redfish with a kayak in shallow water. Lefty Ray will conduct the majority of the day with Capt. Sally covering the last session of the day.

On Sunday we will divide into 2 groups and put into practice what we covered on Saturday. Even though the class size is limited, this is not to be considered a guided trip. We want to give you the experience of what it is like out on the flats chasing redfish. While some people do catch fish our intent is to bring you up to speed so that you can chase redfish with a kayak on your own.
